Aim: Volunteering provides an essential component to the well being of the community and includes action that effects social change. It is not confined to the performance of a service for another


Volunteering Code

Volunteering is voluntary and is something an individual chooses to do by giving their timely freely. This can be described as "an important expression of citizenship and essential to democracy. It is the commitment of time and energy for the benefit of soicety and the community, and can take many forms. It is undertaken freely and by choice, without concern for financial gain". Volunteering is associated with a charitable or voluntary body, statutory not for profit agencies, self-help, information and community groups.
    Commitments / Obligations:
  • Volunteers should expect reimbursement of expenses that ensure they are not out of pocket as a consequence of their volunteering.
  • Volunteers should be able to request payment by either cheque or cash.
  • Volunteers should not be expected to take on the work of paid staff.
  • Volunteers should expect training as necessary for them to carry out their role.
  • Volunteers should have appropriate opportunities for individual development.
  • Volunteers should expect an induction and to be informed of their rights and obligations.
  • Volunteers can expect to have clear lines of management and support.
  • Organisations should provide clear role descriptions so volunteers can make an informed decision on the commitment expected from them.
  • Organisations should recognise the need for volunteers with special needs to have their carer present.
  • Organisations should expect a consistent and professional commitment from volunteers to support them in the delivery of their service.
